Task Force Plans to Revive Ocean Drive

February 4, 2016 - On Wednesday, Jonathan Plutzik, owner of The Betsy South Beach hotel and chairman of the Mayor's Ocean Drive Task Force, met with The Land Use Committee of the Miami Beach City Commission to discuss the 30 recommendations made by the Task Force in their Final Report, including devoting additional police and code compliance resources to enforcement, enforcing automobile noise restrictions with appropriate police discretion, eliminating real and artificial food displays in all sidewalk visible locations, and installing new City-specified low-profile umbrellas on the entire West sidewalk of the iconic art deco strip.

The Task Force is made up of a group of concerned business owners and residents selected by the Mayor to recommend changes to the City Commission concerning the Ocean Drive environment. These changes strive to elevate the experience and safety of all residents and visitors, improve Ocean Drive's commercial vitality, and grow its reputation as a wonderful place to live and work among great architecture, culture and cuisine.

The Task Force hopes to beautify the current landscape as well as restore the historical dignity of Ocean Drive. This move toward revitalization follows last year’s overwhelming approval for the re-imagining of Washington Avenue by the City Commission and city approvals for a total redesign of Lincoln Road’s common areas by James Corner Field Operations. Ocean Drive isn’t just a choice location for hotels and restaurants, it’s also home to many South Beach luxury condo owners who paid top dollar for peace of mind. With multimillion-dollar condos, like Glass on South of Fifth, booming, it’s only fitting Ocean Drive shed its rowdy Bourbon Street image.

Plutzik told The Real Deal he’s encouraged commissioners seem ready to move quickly on the proposals. “All of us agree it’s tremendously important that we show immediate progress on making Ocean Drive special again.”
