July 14, 2015 - With the prestigious Pritzker Prize awards ceremony at the New World Center May 15, it's official Miami Beach is the grand new playing field of global architecture. The Frank Gehry-designed centerpiece on Lincoln Road is the perfect venue for the coveted Pritzker, its Nobel Prize. Attending will be previous awardees Zaha Hadid and Shigeru Ban. This year's laureate is Germany’s Frei Otto, who is feted posthumously, having recently passed.
Ever since Art Basel and Design Miami spotlighted Miami as the choice destination for Fendi contemporary art and design fairs, Miami has attracted big-label corporations as Porsche (Porsche Design Tower), and LVMH, as well as top luxury hotel and real estate developers with deep pockets anxious to do big business here.
Maison&Objet, the chic home and interior design fair from Paris, recently added Miami to their annual roster of destinations and debuted at the Miami Beach Convention Center this week. Bringing a new, sophisticated moneyed crowd to the possibilities of life in South Beach, the show was a smash. Savvy furniture and home accessories designers from Rio to Bangkok surveyed our newest five-star destinations -- Ian Schrager’s Edition, Metropolitan by COMO-Paola Navone; 1 Hotel & Homes-Meyer/Davis Studio -- all created by the best names in the design business. Because state-of-the-art oceanfront penthouses need incredible furniture.
